The First Grade classes explored shadows and sunlight. We experimented with LEGO mini figures, studying how their shadows changed as the sun (flashlight) moved across the sky. To learn how we could use the sun to help our way if we get lost, we experimented with a compass and a stick to find east and west by tracking how the sun's shadow changes over time. We, then, created watercolor landscape paintings of sunrise and sunset with accurate shadow representations of trees. Lastly, we experimented with different materials, such as aluminum foil and mirrors, to see how we could bend sunlight to warm up a town that is usually in the shade.
