Grade 5: Oceans & Light

In Fifth Grade, we explored ocean currents. Among other things, the fifth graders generated their own ocean currents and studied salinity, density, and buoyancy with different activities. Students, then, participated in various engineering challenges involving index cards, plastic cups, craft sticks, blocks, string, and rubber bands. We are currently focusing on our color and light unit. Fifth graders learned about the difference between transparent, translucent, and opaque materials and how light is refracted, reflected, or absorbed. They also enjoyed exploring color with prisms, CDs, and flashlights.
